Time is the essence of life, it is ever-present and ever-changing, to keep uniform track of it, all over the globe we need a standard method of measurement. In ancient times, most of the civilizations used the position of the sun for measuring time, but of course, it could not be verified because of the rotation of the earth, time zones are different. But in the 14th century, a standard timekeeping device known as a ‘clock’ was invented, to display the time. Since the 14th century, the clock has gone through various innovations and changes that made it more efficient in timekeeping. One such innovation in timekeeping devices was unveiled in December 1969, as the quartz watch. A quartz watch is a time measuring device that makes use of an electronic oscillator regulated through a quartz crystal to keep accurate track of time. Quartz watches are fashioned and worn by masses, due to their styling component and accurate time measurement. Even though mobile phones have substituted the need for watches but they could not take away the nostalgic-cum-aesthetic element that a quartz watch adds to your appearance. All these elements led to a quartz watches revolution, but it does have pros and cons as discussed below-

Pros

Quartz watches instantly proved out to be an example, of how the most accurate and reliable way to measure time was not with a complex network of gears but with a small quartz crystal battery and some tiny motors. Quartz watches require much less servicing and occasional battery changes. They are more affordable and accurate than most expensive mechanical watches. Most importantly, you can wear it every day, due to its durability. These all are the pros that will encourage you to buy a quartz watch.

Cons

The history of watches has always been romanticized because of their technical craftsmanship, and engineering. Quartz watches lack that element in them and hence are not appraised due to a lack of charm in them. Other than that, the staggered movement of the second hand in quartz watch proves out to be another con.

Quartz movement-

Movement is called the heart of the watch. It is a mechanism that moves the hands on a watch face and powers its complicated functions like calendar, chronograph, and a dual time zone.  Mechanisms are the soul of the watch, and a carefully designed watch is a treasure. There are three types of movements-

  1. Quartz movement

  2. Mechanical movement

  3. Automatic movement

Quartz movement is powered by a battery and causes the second hand to move in single ticks. It was introduced in 1969 and challenged the traditional clocks and watches, which relied on mechanical movement for power. The introduction of the quartz movement gave birth to battery-operated wristwatches. Along with that quartz movement have the following benefits-

  • Accuracy in timing
  • Simple of use
  • Low maintenance
  • Comparatively cheap
  • Durable

Watches with quartz movement are made for daily use, because of their durability and reliability.

Quartz watches are vogue because of their strong design and durability; also they are well designed to complement your looks. With the introduction of an automatic movement quartz watch is facing tough competition, but due to its affordable price and durability, it still holds a good position in the market.
